I am a Physical Education Teacher at two elementary schools in rural North Carolina. The upcoming school year will mark my second year with my students at the two schools. Due to my position, I can watch students grow from giggly kindergartners to precocious fifth graders. Although I was a high-school tennis player, my love for sports blossomed when I watched Karch Kiraly playing volleyball during the '84 Summer Olympics. I am the middle child, stuck in between two boys--I had to play football and baseball with them because they refused to play with my dolls. We watched sports on TV together and my brothers decided that volleyball was cool, and not " a girlie game" because of Karch Kiraly. We played volleyball for the rest of the summer and fall. I am grateful to Karch Kiraly--I no longer had bruises from tackle football! I want my students to experience volleyball, also. It is such a unique sport because it allows you to use large groups of muscles, develop coordination, timing, and leg muscle strength. I need volleyball standards and volleyballs for one school which has a gymnasium and an outdoor volleyball set for the other school because it does not have a gym. Your grant funding will enable me to instruct my students during a volleyball unit. The next generation of Karch Kiralys may be at one or both of my elementary schools--let's give them the option of learning the sport and help them be the best volleyball players they can be!
