Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Things such as paper and pencils are usually taken for granted. However, due to limited school budgets, such items are sometimes hard to acquire.
My seventh graders this year were my fifth graders a few years ago, and they proved to me, over and over again, to be superb writers.
I taught them how to organize their thoughts with an organizer known as 4-Square. They were able to develop strong essays and made great progress on the state writing assessment.
Students learned to use a simple piece of copier paper or construction paper for their 4-square graphic organizers. They expertly folded the paper and developed meaningful, organized five-paragraph essays. I found that the bigger the paper, the more detailed-papers I received!
My students attend the lowest income school in our district. However, they are just as talented as their peers at our sister schools. In fact, in just two years, they have helped to bring our school up from 12th place (last) to 3rd with regard to academic excellence. They need continued opportunities to excel, to have their voices projected upon paper, and to become successful members of society.
My Project
The requested Staples copy paper and pencils will help my students organize their thoughts into meaningful paragraphs that will eventually be turned into strong essays. It may seem a ridiculous request asking simply for paper and pencils, but such tools cannot often be accessed by my students.
Using the larger paper requested here, students will be able to brainstorm and write, edit and revise their rough drafts with ease.
They will be provided with ample practice as I assign a new essay every week. There is a great deal of whole class practice with these organizers and much individual practice as well.
