My students come from Hawaiian homelands and are lower in economic status. These 5-year old children are always eager to learn and get their hands on all learning possibilities. As a charter school, the families have specifically selected this school and have been thankful to have made it into the class as we cap the enrollment numbers.
Many of the students in my class have siblings at the school, and this creates a family atmosphere as a whole.
Not all of these 5-year old children had the means to attend preschool; thus, this is their very first formal school setting.
My Project
The first thing you notice when walking into a classroom is how it looks and how it is set up. The focal point of instruction for Kindergarten is the carpet that students sit upon. The teacher chair is the spot light. Although it may not seem very important, the design of a classroom is crucial to a student’s education.
The teachers chair in Kindergarten is the spot light for instructing and the design of the classroom affects student behavior and work ethic.
The teacher chair also provides social emotional comfort when these young children needs to have their needs met with a hug or by sitting on a safe adult to be rocked.
The teacher chair is used by any adult reader that comes in to read to the students. Furniture arrangement in the classroom has a great effect on student behavior. According to Zifferblatt (1972), there is a direct correlation between student behavior and furniture arrangement in the classroom.
