My class of 24 is multi-age, with preschoolers, pre-kindergartners AND kindergartners. ONLY the kindergartners were supplied with laptops for home and out of my 9 Kindergarten students only 5 have laptops that are fully functioning. I do 7 ZOOM meetings a week but due to these inequalities in accessing technology from the school, only a few are able to participate, and of course my preschoolers can only access if their households have a laptop or smart phone available.
My students come from many backgrounds, with many different living arrangements and technology resources, But, of course, any remote learning model is not going to meet the needs of this younger group of students.
My students need hands on materials. They need to have equitable access to the curriculum and I can only do that by delivering what they need right to them. They learn by touching and experiencing not just by watching a video. The COVID 19 world of education has thrust me into role I may not have been ready for but one for which I am willing to embrace.....but I need your help.
My classroom was a room rich with authors and illustrators, all writing at their developmental levels, from illustrating and oral telling of their stories, to writing 10-15 page books, complete with glossaries and TWO title pages! but then the schools shut down. My budding authors and illustrators don't have the materials they need to continue this path from home.
These journals and writing tools will help them to control their penmanship, and help to spark some ideas for writing;
The books will remind them about what good authors like to write about. The combination of both books to independently read and journals to record their own thoughts will help them to independently continue on their learning path to excellence.
