This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom consists of students from diverse backgrounds. The one thing most have in common is that they are all from low-income households. My school is a Title 1 school and 100 percent of my students are on free lunch.
Even though they come from a poverty-stricken background, they desire to learn.
Most of my students are not exposed to rich literature at home. They rely on the school system to take them on adventures of the minds.
My Project
My project includes a class set of the novel, Flipped, by Wendelin Van Draanen. This book is a wonderful read, but more importantly, a great teaching tool. My students will be drawn into the lives of Bryce and Julie, the main characters. In alternating chapters, they will see how each character's perspective can be totally different from the same scenario.
The characters in Flipped will have them laughing, crying, and hopefully finding out that kindness is the new cool.
My struggling readers will also have the opportunity to improve their comprehension by reading the he said/she said versions of the same time frame.
