My students need 5 standing desks and 1 padded reception chair. The standing desks will provide a mobile workspace for students who prefer to be on their feet.
Our students experience and are challenged by diversity and difference on a daily basis. The diversity of our school extends to socio-economics, race and ethnicity, community and culture, and personal experiences. Despite these differences, and because of them, each student and staff member on our campus daily contributes to an amazing school culture focused on open-mindedness, excellence, and equity. Over the course of their middle school years, our students learn to love, value, and appreciate this diversity, both within our school and across the world. I have never worked at a better school.
I teach 8th-grade math, both to highly motivated students, and to students that struggle in the subject.
Although we work hard to achieve content mastery, our primary goal in my classroom is to value each other over the work. My students and I strive to create a community/family focused on positive relationships, positive culture, and helping each other to build belief in oneself and a growth mindset.
My Project
Earlier this year, I initiated a flexible seating project on Donor's Choose in order to provide my students with an adaptive, active, and comfortable environment. Through the support of my community, I was able to raise money to purchase unique seating and work spaces that have had an incredible impact on my student's this year. This is an extension of that project to provide extra work spaces and seating for my student's.
Middle school students spend most of their school day sitting in desks with hard, stiff chairs making them uncomfortable and fidgety.
My goal is to provide my students with comfortable, effective seating options to help improve focus and engagement.
Research shows that flexible, active, seating helps students burn calories, use up excess energy, be more engaged in lessons, increase on-task behavior and create better oxygen flow to the brain.
The requested chair and standing desks will give my students more options for what best fits their activity and learning needs of the day. These workspace options will help to increase engagement and motivation in the classroom.
