it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when it was time to learn about viruses, bacteria and cells? Remember listening to your teacher tell you that everything was made of living cells and cells are too small to be seen with your eye? I am a 6th grade science teacher at a middle school in a rural area of Chatham County (Siler City) in North Carolina. I teach a total of 65 students. I see the looks of awe and confusion each day when I try to explain to the students that there are many things that our eyes cannot see. I use pictures, diagrams and examples but sometimes it is just not enough. Sometimes I even do a computer simulations but nothing is the same as seeing and touching something real.
There are many of the students that I teach who do not speak English or who have English as a second language and trying to teaching them about science topics that are not so concrete is a challenge especially when I do not have the technology to show them what it is that I am referring.
I remember the first time I learned about cells and bacteria I was so excited. Here I was an 8th grade student and I was able to see, and I mean really see, what it was that my science teacher was talking about because we had microscopes in our classroom. It was at that moment that I remember thinking that I too wanted to be a scientist. My life was changed and all because I was able to really and truly understand what the teacher was referring too. I know that all of the students that I teach will not have the type of revelation that I had, but if just one does, to me it is all worth it.
Currently our school only has 2 fully functional microscopes. In the spring I am going to begin teaching the children about plant and human cells as well as bacteria and viruses. I would like to ask for 3 microscopes so that I will be able to set up stations for the children to look at different types of live and premounted cells.
This will be the first time that the students are introduced to this science topic. I want this to be a positive experience for them so that as they progress in their science courses they will have the proper foundation from to become a future scientist.
