Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My bilingual, special education students are in grades four, five, and six. My students' ages range from 9-12. They have special learning needs and have the grand task of learning their grade-level curriculum, as well as learn a new language. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area. Ninety-five percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, and some of our students are homeless.
My students need the tools to close the achievement gap.
They are eager to learn and explore. They need to have the materials that will make it possible for them to do that. Having the right tools will help them build the confidence and determination necessary to succeed academically and as individuals.
My Project
We are in an age where artificial intelligence is helping our world in various ways. I have provided my students with access to programs that help them practice areas they need to increase their understanding. Research indicates that teaching others is the best way to demonstrate understanding. In our bilingual school, many families are learning English and are unfamiliar with the Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Standards. Many of families in did not have formal education prior to coming to the United States.
I read about this PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program and I am excited for my students to learn and teach their families in their preferred language.
They will then teach their family members at home. It is a comfortable setting because their family is learning with them. The students can start by teaching their families how to use the program and how to enter feedback. I have seen how my students have learned to use the programs they have now in school and how they help other students learn how to access these programs. I can't wait to see how much they will learn by teaching their families. It is my belief that this program will increase their confidence and their passion to learn more. Igniting their passion to learn will help us get one step closer to closing the achievement gap.
