Paul Robeson High School is a “high-need” school on Chicago's South side. We are located in the heart of the Englewood community which is one of Chicago's poorest and toughest areas. Many of my students are from single parent homes and a non-traditional family environment. Approximately 95% of the students that attend our school receive free or reduced-price lunch. I am currently teaching 5 classes (150 total students) of Geometry and many of my students have difficulties with standard geometric concepts. A very effective means for me to help my students with these difficult concepts is through the use of manipulatives. I am a firm believer in a student-centered learning environment that uses manipulatives to encourage students to take part in discovery learning activities. One of these manipulatives I am requesting is computer software called Geometer's Sketchpad. The Geometer's Sketchpad brings a powerful dimension to the study of Geometry. It is versatile and easy to use; Sketchpad is a dynamic construction and exploration tool that enables students to understand mathematics in ways that are not possible with traditional tools. As a whole, within Sketchpad students can construct an object and explore its mathematical properties by dragging it with the mouse. Some activities I would like to do with Sketchpad are: 1) Prove/Disprove Triangle Congruency Theorems; 2) Developing area formulas for various polygon shapes; 3) Constructing and classification of angles. I am excited about the idea of implementing Sketchpad into my classroom curriculum and any assistance in bring this request to fruition would be greatly appreciated.
