I am the K-2 Title I reading teacher in a low income southwest Missouri school district. I work with approximately 30 students, either individually or in small groups.
I love working with the youngest struggling readers who usually still have the "love of learning".
Their potential for learning can only go up if I can help them see the relevance of how learning to read is a vital life-long skill.
I do a variety of reading assessments to help guide my instruction and also collaborate with the classroom teachers. I strive to use many multi-sensory strategies to address my students' many learning needs.
My Project
Children love and need music. I am planning to teach two different prekindergarten "special" classes this summer and my principal said to do something fun. I will have them for 50 minutes/ 4 times a week for a month. I know that children love to sing and use instruments. Since I am not a music teacher I thought I would use hand bells and get a Rhythm Band Bells Alive Music Learning DVD so we could follow along and play. I had my second graders this year use xylophones for a program and I enjoyed teaching them some simple songs. The second graders would love using this hand bells, too. I hope we can use them at the end of the year for a final project.
These colorful 8-Note Hand bell Sets would give all of my students opportunity to explore music and also would help enhance their listening and following directions abilities.
When teaching children to read they need to be able to hear and distinguish different sounds. Hopefully these hand bells will increase their attention span to help them focus in other academic learning.
