Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school is made up of five hundred and forty students that are mostly from economically disadvantaged families who speak Spanish as their first language. The children are learning English at school. Almost all of the students start school for the first time without experiencing any preschool, which puts them at an academic disadvantage. The school does not have a lot of family involvement that is needed in order to support children's academic learning at school. My students need all of the support that they can get in order to succeed in school.
The students in my class are all from low-income families that are struggling to meet their basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing.
The students all qualify for free lunch and uniforms. The students live in a very small community; most live in trailers and do not have air conditioning to keep cool in the hot weather. The families are struggling to keep their jobs and many are migrant farm workers.
My Project
My students will greatly benefit from new learning materials that they can build and play with while interacting with peers and improving necessary social skills. Specific learning outcomes and goals for students who use these materials is improving small motor skills, eye hand corrdinaion, and building confidence and reinforcing reading and math skills through practice. The building bricks and blocks, clip and create builders, and jumbo building brick animals will help develop fine motor skills and can be used to practice counting skills along with creating a cooperative learning environment in which students can improve social skills. The sight words puzzles help reinforce learning through practice in a hands on activity that builds fine motor skills that are needed to learn to write. The find the letter activity center builds letter knowledge and fine motor skills. The magnetic shapes provides a center where students can use the shapes in creative play and reinforce learning the names and describing the attributes of the shapes. The foam paint can be used to write numbers, letters, or draw shapes. Manipulatives increase student engagement in learning and provide a relaxing classroom environment where children feel safe to take risks and try their best because they are properly supported by peers which helps to improve their learning. Students thrive in a classroom environment that considers student interest in learning activities. Including art and manipulatives when teaching reading, writing, and math helps to improve student engagement and participation in order to help all students be successful and have fun learning in school.
