Most of my students come from low income households and have a very hard time succeeding in school. Over forty percent of our school qualifies for free or reduced priced lunch. Our school district does not have enough funds to give teachers the resources to teach every student and we are considered to be a Title One school district. Teachers have to rely on handouts or use their own money to gather the tools they need to be effective in the classroom.
Students need new and exciting ways of being taught and teachers need the supplies to teach them.
Many student speak English as a second language and would benefit with more resources in the classroom. In science, the content can be difficult for them to understand due to the language barrier. They typically give up instead of putting in more effort. As their teacher, I am looking for new and exciting ways to help these students to stay in school and help them learn with less anxiety.
My Project
My students enjoy having fish in the classroom and I feel it is a great learning experience for them. With three tanks in the room, they always help me care for the fish and help maintain the fish tanks. We have a guppy breeding tank ( 20 gallons) a GloFish tank (10 gallon) and a 40 gallon goldfish tank. My students are intrigued by each tank and how special each tank is. They enjoy seeing all the new babies in the guppy tank, How big the Goldfish are getting in the big tank and love to see the glow from the Glofish tank.
Since my students take responsibility for maintaining the fish tanks, they made me aware of supplies we need to help keep our fish happy.
We need new filter cartilages for the 40 gallon tank and a new filter for the Glofish tank, a air pump and supplies, more food, water conditioner and some automatic food feeders for when we are on vacations. They are very excited to be able to be able to help take care of our classroom pets!
