My first graders are English language learners who recently moved to the United States from Mainland China. Having to adapt to speak a foreign language and live in a foreign culture, these youngsters must make a tremendous effort to adjust to a completely new and unfamiliar learning environment. As eager learners, they share a common desire to bring forth their curiosity and perseverance in hardship to the classroom. Each of my students represents a unique personality, yet shares the same goal in learning. These students do not give up easily despite the challenges they must face every day. They strive for success as they share the same enthusiasm to achieve academically. They understand clearly that they must work hard in order to succeed.
My Project
My students do not get to attend Science class as much as they would love to. The only way they can be exposed to different interesting Science topics will be by reading Scholastic News magazines with online interactive support at their grade level, as well as having exposure to high quality guided reading books. These English learners are visual learners. They will really enjoy watching Science and Social Studies videos which cover many fascinating topics that come with the Scholastic News magazines. I can't wait to see them become proficient in Science and Social Studies subjects and be good at reading short articles in these topics with content vocabulary!
