Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of sixth graders at an urban elementary school. They come from different backgrounds and many speak languages other than English. They are eager and curious about the world around them which makes it a joy to teach them. They enjoy learning and are very fun and friendly.
They enjoy working collaboratively to solve problems, help each other succeed, and to reinforce their own learning.
They are working hard on both traditional skills like research reports and math procedures as well as multimedia projects like movies and PowerPoint presentations. The students are excited our school has begun to emphasize technology and engineering to prepare them for their future careers.
My Project
My 6th graders enjoy reading good stories and discussing them as a class. I have been on a quest to find great books with strong female leads. My classes have loved books like Wonder and Where the Red Fern Grows but I realized the majority of the books had a male lead character. I have recently added Esperanza Rising and now want to include Julie of the Wolves and The Westing Game. (I know The Westing Game has multiple characters but a woman solves the mystery in the end. Plus I want my pupils to exercise their brains trying to solve the "game".)
All good literature has universal themes, but I want my female students to see themselves in the main characters.
Class sets are important because it allows the experience of the novel to be as a group. I am continually amazed at the deep relevant discussions that my students have over books. I have also included teacher guides to help me facilitate their learning and enjoyment of the novels.
Please consider donating to this project so we can expand our collection of class sets of children's literature. Thank you!
