Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The art department has limited money and with budget cuts things have gotten worse. I have about 35-40 students in most of my classes. Most of the money we have is exhausted on materials that need to be replenished on a yearly basis.
We are in a very low income school district.
Around 80% or more of our student body is on free or reduced lunch. We are one of the largest public schools in our area, pushing close to 3,000 students. Many of them do not have the financial stability to afford some of the materials I would like to expose them to.
Despite lack of finances and our large class sizes, my students are so excited about everything. Anything that I show them they are eager and willing to try. I know they truly appreciate what is given to them and they are excited about this new school year.
My Project
I need these materials so that my students can do sculpture and drawing assignments. The sculpture students build the most amazing things out of nothing. They use soda cans, scraps, trash, etc and turn them into beautiful pieces of art.
We need the wire and glue sticks for projects like these though. The matboard I'm requesting is to frame their artwork for display and competitions. I'm also asking for rulers so that we can do perspective assignments.
I'm planning on doing drawing assignments with charcoal that require the students to do detailed blending, so I have asked for fixative to spray them with after they are done. I find that having them use all these materials and teaching them how to use them properly prepares them for life at art colleges. I plan on entering their art pieces in contests to get them scholarships, as well.
We aren't able to purchase items like these without your assistance.
Most of the money I have goes towards paper, paint, and other basic materials. I want for my students to be able to explore and experience things that they normally wouldn't be able to. These supplies will allow them to learn in a fun way, help us with fundraisers, and become amazing art pieces that will get students into art schools and allow them to get art scholarships.
