Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn. All of them are Hispanic like me. I worked hard on trying to create activities that are meaningful to them, but we still experienced a lot of barriers, such as lack of manipulatives, books, boards, and computers. As well as chairs for reading and a carpet to sit down.
My students came from low-income families with parents who work long hours to make ends meet.
If they have a computer or a tablet at home with internet access, the students will be able to see educational videos or enter into the various wonderful programs that the school offer for reading and writing.
Less than one-third of my students are using the internet. The rest are using their parents' phone to keep in contact. Some parents work and need to take their phones with them. So, the child can use it only when the parent has a day off or after working hours.
My Project
Our school is an Early Learning Center, and houses children from pre-k to first grade and most of our students, if not all, come from low-income families. These children need a lot of help. Some of them come to kindergarten without any type of background knowledge and they have difficulties to learn because their parents are illiterate and unable to help them at home.
Students need any type of electronic device with access to the Internet at home to continue their education.
Access to technology is imperative now more than ever due to this epidemic. Less than one-third of my students in each class have a tablet or a computer at home, the rest are working with their parents’ phones with very poor connections.
Another problem is that most of the parents are unable to help the students at home. Only an electronic device will allow students to see videos and listen to programs that the school offers and will allow me to have live-conferences with them.
