Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have never had an art class. They are afraid of art but with Ceramics... Clay = Play.
Because clay feels nonthreatening, they are willing to work with it and learn from their experiences and mistakes.
Clay is very forgiving and they enjoy it.
My students come from all different backgrounds but clay brings them together. They learn how to help each other out and we've created a safe learning environment in which they can be creative and silly.
My Project
Help get us a pottery wheel so my students can experience forming functional pieces with their hands. Their hand built pieces tend to be "bumpy and lumpy."
I want to give them the experience of a professional pottery wheel.
I bring my own wheel to school but having another wheel will make it easier to give more students a chance to get on the wheel.
Students will learn how to form cylinders and bowls from centering the clay to trimming the foot on their piece. I have students from all walks of life, including many special needs students. Help me get them on the wheel.
