I have a great set of students each year who love being in my science class. It never fails to amaze me every year the number of students who become totally engaged and interested in science. This is easily seen when students are telling me about some content they saw and how they relate it back to the thing that we have covered. The best part is that I get to learn from them as well. We have created a community where we really do collaborate on the subject. It is not taught or student-centered, but rather we have made our class subject-centered.
I am also the AVID coordinator at my site and use DonorsChoose.org to bring materials to our AVID team to support our AVID students.
My Project
Our digital native students are accustomed to consuming high-quality digital content on the internet, especially through YouTube. Many of the channels that students are watching are using high-quality digital equipment that makes their digital content crisp and engaging. In order to produce this kind of digital content, you need quality equipment that will help both teachers and students compose their own high-quality digital content. This is a media that they are comfortable with and are used to interacting with. Imagine creating tutorials for difficult science problems, not on a shaky phone camera. How interesting can we make our content? I would also expect students to produce their own content as a way to show mastery of the topic(s) we are covering. Just imagine the possibilities! This DSLR camera will be used by myself to create digital content such as dissection and lab protocols. Students will use this to explain how they solve problems or shoot video of their own independent dissections.
