This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is not uncommon for a math teacher to hear a student ask, "Why are we learning this? " or "When will I ever use this again?". These are very valid questions, which is why in our math classroom we approach algebra from a real-world lens as often as possible, but need more resources.

My students are incredibly smart and talented.

They get very excited about math and applying it to the real-world. However they face incredible obstacles to their education. They attend school in one of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC. Our school does not have the resources to provide them with certain tools needed to further their success.

My Project

With these graphing calculators my students will be able to model optimization problems, such as maximizing area and volume. They will be able to use these tools to better examine and graph real-world business models such as inputting data to create a quantity functions, revenue functions, and profit functions.

Having these tools allows the students to better understand the real world applications of mathematics.

By having a better understanding of how math is used it also opens them up to ideas and future career options they previously never considered. It also provides them with materials they can later use on standardized state exams and the SAT exam.
