My students need 60 subscriptions to TIME For Kids magazines to read during social studies class. They will practice reading skills and keep up with current events at the same time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have taught at the same school for 23 years and my students are always eager to learn. I teach in an urban school that provides students with a quality education.
The 60 fourth grade students that I will be working with this year come from diverse backgrounds and deserve the same tools and experiences that students in other school districts receive.
This year not only are the students excited but I am excited as well moving to a new grade level and already knowing the wonderful students that I will have!
My Project
I used TIME For Kids magazine last year with my third graders in social studies and they loved reading them. I used them as a Friday current event activity and they always looked forward to it. We sometimes partner read and reported out to the class about what we read, other times we circle read and everyone got a turn, and finally I sometimes assigned an article for homework and the students write about the main idea and details. I also enjoyed and started to use the electronic version of the magazine. The students enjoyed listening to the automated readings.
The students' reading levels improved and this was one of the reasons why.
The students even wrote to the magazine to express their ideas and opinions.
