Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are from significantly disadvantaged socio-economic households and face an array of physical and psychosocial stressors. Research shows there is a direct relationship between poverty and children's education and that poor nutrition and health along with high mobility rates greatly impact and negatively influence a students' cognitive performance and daily classroom participation. In addition, many of my students have experienced trauma in varying degrees which adds to their every day challenge at school; All this, but imagine having a learning disability on top of it!
Imagine the challenges my special needs students have in accessing their learning in addition to their chaotic and stressful home life.
My job is to make sure that each of my students believe whole heartily that they have unlimited potential and are worthy of everything this world has to offer. I feel fortunate that, despite their disabilities and unique challenges, they truly are eager to learn and want to put forth their best efforts. My students want and deserve a teacher who, not only believes in them, but who are well trained and with proper recources to meet their diverese needs.
My Project
I have recently attended the IMSE Ortin-Gillingham 30 hour Comprehensive training Course and have become totally hooked to this O.G. Approach to reading instruction, and, best of all, I see everyday how my students postively respond and are motivated by this interactive multi-sensory instruction.
But I can still improve my reading instruction!
I know with more training I can enhance my lessons and be more effective with my reading instruction. This will allow me to use the OG program with fidelity and with more differentiation to reach my diverse students' needs. So, the next step to improve instruction is for me to participate in a 50- hour practicum which will offer me direct feedback and expert coaching so that I can learn to individualize and tailor my instruction to deliver exactly what my students need. I hope to be more effective and efficient at my craft.
During the practicum, I will be observed in my class several times and will be offered direct feed back and one on one coaching. With this coaching guidance, I will develop lesson plans to meet the diverse needs of my students, all while guiding me to successfully implement the IMSE OG methodology in my classroom in the most effective ways. During this time, I will be required to submit progress monitoring data and reports, complete assignments and required readings, and take an exit exam upon completion of the practicum.
The positive outcomes of this practicum will not only help me grow professionally as a more effective reading teacher but will impact many future students for years to come.
