Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are high school juniors and seniors who are simultaneously excited for and terrified by the prospect of college. In order to help them prepare for the college application process, I work closely with them to not only help with the logistics of such a complicated process but provide support and motivation throughout.

My students have big plans for college and their lives.

They want to go on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, and investment bankers. They have only a short year until they will have to navigate the world outside of the school that many of them have known since sixth grade. I want to ensure that they are given all the resources necessary for them to transition from high school to college and beyond.

My Project

As the college counselor, I meet with students weekly beginning in 11th grade to begin discussing all aspects of the college application process, including creating a college list, drafting a resume and researching financial aid options. As our students enter their senior year, they are now faced with the challenge of submitting their college and scholarship applications.

Every year, we take the 11th grade students to Washington DC to visit colleges.

However, this year due to the coronavirus outbreak, we have to postpone our trip to the fall. While my students are upset, they are looking forward to finally visiting the colleges they have been excited to see. This project will allow my students to finally go on their college trip that they have been looking to all year. For most of my students, this would have been their first time leaving New York and they deserve the opportunity to visit places that can potentially become their home for the next 4 years!
