My students are going to be great mathematicians someday!
The cost of 35 sets of 30 rulers and 35 sets of 30 protractors from Delta Education and 35 packs of Bic pens from Quill Corporation is $1057, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a seventh grade math teacher at a struggling school of 1000 in Harlem. One of the challenges that my school faces is that we do not have the supplies we need to teach students the mathematical concepts. Right now, there are no protractors or rulers for the students at my school. Even though my students will be tested by the state on their ability to measure angles and lines, I cannot help them practice these skills because I don't have the supplies I need.
I believe that my students are going to be great mathematicians someday. Some of them want to be math teachers. Some want to do research involving math. Several want to work with numbers as pediatricians. I work at a school full of children with so much potential. But I am frustrated by the lack of resources that these children get to reach their potential. How can a child have a fair chance to become a math scholar when that child does not have access to the basics: a protractor and a ruler?
My students have enough disadvantages. Some face terrible home situations. Most have seen violence in their neighborhoods as 13-year-olds that I have never seen in my life. With so many of the odds against them, I believe that they deserve the best chance they can get to succeed academically. And that chance is based, at least in part, on their access to materials like protractors that children in wealthier districts get without asking.
I have a goal: I want to get a protractor and a ruler for each of the thousand students in my school. I am writing this proposal to ask if you will help me in that goal. My students can become amazing researchers, mathematicians, doctors-- but they need the supplies. I've asked for a protractor and a ruler for each student, and for some extra pens for them to use to record their work.
The students at my school have the potential-- but we cannot do it without resources. Will you help us?
