Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a teacher of color in a very poor community. All of my students are either living in a shelter or foster homes, but you would never know just by looking at them. I have 100% attendance for the months of December and so far January. They walk into the classroom daily ready to learn. My students all have classified disabilities ranging from autism, health impairment, and learning disability to name a few. We need tablets so that students can conduct their individual research, log on to Epic, I-ready, and Read Works for assessments and grade level reading. They need pencils for writing and colored pencils for their art work.

My classroom consists of 12 students but we currently have 9 tablets.

This limits the entire class to work in groups at the same time. We are currently conducting a Science experiment researching which constellation is visible and at what time. The additional tablets will allow each student to research the constellation of their interest. On a daily basis, I set aside 30 minutes when students using their tablets log into Epic, I-ready, or Read Works. They would read grade-level articles or books, and stop and jot. At the end of the 30 minutes, they would share their points of interest. This is not possible to have the students do the same assignment as we are limited. Some of the students often get upset as they feel that they are left out which is not the case. I am requesting help from you, generous donors, to help these students.
