Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 44 seventh graders, believe it or not, love to read. Hand a student a book by Sharon M. Draper or Walter Dean Myers, and he can sit engrossed in a corner of the room for a solid hour. The problem, however, begins when there aren't enough high-interest books to go around. That same child, stuck with a book he doesn't like, whispers across the room to his friend, throws paper at the nearest girl, snickers and taps rhythms with his pen and engages in other more stereotypical 7th-grade behaviors.
My vision is that a strong spirit or culture of independent reading will pervade my classroom and my students. But in order to get to that point, all students need to be hooked into books they really connect with. My classroom needs books written by authors like Jacqueline Woodson, Sharon M. Draper, Sharon Flake, Nikki Grimes, Sarah Dessen. These authors deal with the tough issues that my own economically underprivileged students deal with -- identity, race, violence, loss, hope -- and my students can't get enough of these books, literally. In fact, these books are so desired that they are known as "hot books." I have students often saying things like, "I'm next on the waiting list for this book," or, "When is that person going to hurry up and finish that book?"
Your care and generosity will ensure that all of my students can be matched up with books that will hook them, books that will connect with them, books that will challenge them, teach them, inspire them.
