Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students bring a smile to my face every morning with their excitement to learn everyday. They are eager to start their day with a book in their hands and love to share what they read during our morning "Wake Up and Read" time.
Starting a new school year is always difficult and for my ESL students it is even harder.
Having a language barrier can discourage one from learning. My school is located in a low-income neighborhood were 99% of the students come from a Hispanic background and have recently arrived to the country. Even though they do not know the language their enthusiasm to share stories and learn something new is a site to see.
My Project
Our old bookshelves gave all they could this year and had to be thrown away since they had become hazardous in the classroom. The bookshelves requested will be used to organize reading books by levels and language. It will give my students the ability to easily access a book which will be labeled and leveled in baskets according to genre. These books will be used during our "Wake Up and Read" time in which students can choose to discuss and teach others what they have read about. It is truly a great way to start our learning day.
The donation will help my students maintain an organized reading corner.
It will also help them learn about genres and reading levels since it will be easily displayed on the bookshelves. The students will increase their reading skills and won't get discouraged or feel overwhelmed when looking for their specific reading level.
