Hi! I am the special education teacher in a kindergarten inclusion class in Brooklyn. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. Approximately seventy-five percent of our students receive free lunch. There are 14 wonderful five year olds in my class. Some of these children have been diagnosed with various disabilities, including delays in gross and fine motor skills, attention deficit disorder, and speech impairments. During the first two months of school, I had noticed that all of my students love sitting on the carpet when learning new material or completing classwork. At five years old, it seems that the freedom they have on the carpet creates a more positive learning experience than sitting on a hard chair and leaning on a large wooden table. They often become very restless at the tables, especially some who lack the body control to even stay on the chair in the first place. I would love to complete as many lessons as possible on the carpet, but the children have to scramble for something hard to lean their paper on and then get pencils or crayons to use. This takes up a lot of time that could have been used for learning. I am asking for lap desks that my students can use on the carpet. These desks are placed in front of the student and provide a place to lean on to write and pockets to hold pencils, crayons, or markers. This will really benefit my students, considering they love the free space they have when sitting on the carpet. We can complete many lessons and work using these desks. Thanks so much!
