Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Imagine: you attend a school with asbestos warnings on the walls, no textbooks, and no school provided academic materials. Your family, despite your pleas, cannot afford paper or pencils. You want to learn and you want to learn to read, but at every turn you face some kind of obstacle.

I have the most wonderful 19 2nd grade students on the face of the earth.

They range in age from 6-10 (because students in Louisiana can be held back for a plethora of reasons), the majority are on some kind of social assistance, and the majority have witness some kind of brutal violence, either against themselves or against a family member. My school has been chronically failing for the past 20 years, and last year it was taken over by the state. It is currently a charter, meaning that we receive significantly less funding than our public school equivalents. Despite all the odds, my students are learning at an alarming rate: 50% of the class came into my roster 1 to 1.5 years behind, and currently they are all on grade level in both math and reading (wooohooo!). They are the most energetic, funny, uplifting, and all around wonderful kids I could ask for. I am so excited that you can help me give these kids the education they deserve.

My Project

I can afford to buy paper, pencils, and second hand books for small group instruction and student use. However, I really need some books on tape that my students can follow along with to increase their fluency (the rate at which they read) and their vocabulary. In addition, much of the 2nd grade curriculum is repeated throughout the year. Because of this, a 2nd grade classroom should be rich with reminders of what students have learned and how they can use that stuff. The easiest way for a teacher with limited resources, like me, to do this, is to use the large sticky easel notes for in class notes and then stick the stickies up on the wall for students to view and use at any time. Ah, if I had these, it would make my job so much more time effective and make my students education so much richer!

The biggest difference anyone can make in the education of a child is teaching them to read and do basic math.

All of the materials I am begging for will help you do this. These kids are too fantastic and too extraordinary to receive anything less than an A++ education. Please help me ensure that these kids are getting everything I've got as a teacher and help me buy these simple, yet versatile, academic materials.
