This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Located in Ward 8 in Southeast, Washington, DC where 90% of the students attending have experienced at least one traumatic experience. The students come to school with baggage. Some live in homes with absent mothers and/or fathers, shootings in the neighborhood, walking to school through chaos and unsafe surroundings. Through all of these negative experiences, they are resilient. They come to school everyday, a place they consider safe, nurturing and with trusted adults. Teaching can be challenging, however, as educators we are resilient, respectful, reflective and responsible for education of our students. We are responsible for exposing them to opportunities they would never dream or speak of.
My Project
Every other day a young lady may visit my office feeling embarrassed or discomfort as a result of needing hygiene products. The reasons may vary from, "I forgot" to "we don't have the money this week". As the School Counselor and a trusted adult in the building girls may need sanitary pads, body wash, wipes, and/or deodorant.
In order to maintain a safe, nurturing, and trusting environment it is important to have the bare necessities available to students in dire need; as majority of our students come from low socioeconomic households.
Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene is an important part of confidence for students in middle school grades and one in three girls have missed school or left school early as a result of being teased for hygiene or not having products readily available.
