My Science of Reading Obsession!

My Project

My Students

I am proud to say that I have twenty-four of the most amazing kindergarten students in my class this year.

Each and every student has a unique quality that makes them special and endearing. Whether it is being a great reader or a kind friend, every child makes our classroom feel like a big family.

I love that the students in my classroom come to school excited and eager to learn despite challenges they may face at home.

They may not have had breakfast or a good night sleep but once they walk through our classroom door, they feel loved and safe. I love being a part of that and I hope my students do too.

My Project

I have a confession to make, I love to read but unfortunately, I feel that I have been going about the teaching of reading all wrong. I have been using the Balanced Literacy approach for the whole of my teaching career. I thought that I was doing the right thing. But recently, I have been obsessed with listening to and reading all about the Science of Reading research. I know that I have many changes to make in my teaching and am hoping to get some new materials that support my teaching.

The addition of these materials will support me in my Science of Reading journey. I am excited to use the alphabet tiles, dry erase boards and Pop It Blocks to instruct my students during their Guided Phonics lessons. The different teaching modalities will help even my most challenged learners.
