My Saxophone is Missing Again...How am I Supposed to Practice?
My students need saxophones so that they no longer will have share it with other students. For these new beginning musicians, practice is key! Without an instrument to play they cannot practice.
What I love most about my students is the unbelievable passion they have developed, after just one year of having a band program in their school.
My students are a diverse group of inner city students who are obsessed with our music program, especially the band program!
They come from cultures that are saturated with the love for music and the performing arts. These students spend countless hours practicing to be the best performers they can be on their instruments. This is the second year that the school has an instrumental music program and the kids are flourishing. These kids deserve every bit of applause!! We have added 3rd grade as part of music instruction as well as added a 5th grade Jazz band due to the students' popular demand. They are all taking advantage of this fantastic opportunity in the hopes to continue playing in band throughout middle and high schools.
They show their dedication by attending before school band rehearsals as well as giving up their recess time at lunch to come and practice their instruments. I think the most special thing that they have developed is our sense of a family within our music program.
My Project
It is hard to practice your instrument, when there isn't one to practice on! My students are suffering from this on a daily basis. Our band program is in it's second year after an amazing and successful first year. Last year we were able to equip almost all students in 4th and 5th grade bands with their own instruments, however our saxophone players had to share. This was detrimental to their progress and success on the instrument. All the other students were able to take their instruments home every day to practice and my saxophone players were on a first come, first serve basis and they became very frustrated. Even when we set up a borrowing schedule, students still took the instrument home when they were not supposed to and the sharer missed out on practice time.
Due to that, we are asking for 2 saxophones in order to give our young musicians a chance at improving and succeeding on the instrument that they have developed a passion and love for.
It will make a huge difference in their learning because they will not have to sit in band rehearsal empty handed or go home on a Friday without their sax while all of their friends go home with their instruments. They will be able to accomplish great feats having their own instrument to practice on.
