This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are Cougars climbing to EXCELLENCE! In order for my fifth and sixth grade scholars to meet with the needs of this ever-changing world, they must be immersed in challenging, thought-provoking, and engaging nonfiction and fiction daily, that provides them with escapes from their current surroundings.
My students are talented beyond measure, beautiful, and hard working young people that are hungry for knowledge.
I am a first year teacher in a first year turn around school. Of the ninety-seven students I teach, less than eleven percent read on grade level. The students I serve, live in an impoverished, crime and drug filled community which threatens to swallow them up on a daily basis. My children's' zip code should not dictate their futures. They deserve quality education. I am a firm believer that my students are capable of meeting and exceeding academic success by interacting with books that push them to look critically at all types of events and characters they have never met. By providing books in which my students can connect with the characters and topics presented, my students will see the value, and flourish. By accepting that literacy increases academic success in all contents, my students will begin to show academic improvement and move closer to college readiness
My Project
With your donation to our classroom library, my fifth and sixth graders will be given the opportunity to "get lost" in new books from a number of genres and topics. Our classes will use the books for independent reading, small group instruction, and literacy circles.
A majority of my students are disinterested in reading and do not see the value in reading.
By providing my students with specific books they enjoy, I am confident that the spark of wanting to read will shine brighter. Currently, a great deal of my students are not experiencing academic success because of their inability to access vocabulary and comprehension skills that can be strengthened through reading. We thank you in advance for empowering my students through literacy.
