I teach in a school with 69% free and reduced lunches and a high percentage of E.S.L. students. My parents have a hard time providing school supplies for their children.
Last year I had a grant funded for journals for my students. These journals were used faithfully and my students took pride in having a special book of their own to write and do scrapbooking.
My students' writing was greatly improved because of their excitement to write and being able to share it their peers. The students used their own personal time that was usually used to play in housekeeping or blocks to work in their journals.
All of my students were able to write at least one full sentence using punctuation and capital letters at the beginning of the sentence. Seven of my students were able to write complete stories using descriptive words in their writing. Even my E.S.L. students were excited to write in their journals and were proud to share them with their parents. The students get to take their journals home at the end of the year to keep and share with others.
Journals must be bought each year and also art supplies must be replenished for the scrapbooking. I would appreciate your support in this project. My students will use these journals in all areas of the curriculum. We use the journals as we go on nature walks outside to look for fall leaves, we look at insects and draw and write about them, we use these journals in literature to express our feelings about an authors point of view and the list could go on and on. Journal writing is not just a part of my curriculum it is a major activity that my students appreciate and cherish. Thank you very much.
