Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each school year, I have the students in my kindergarten class make an ABC book. They make a page a day, using different art materials, until we have completed the alphabet. Then they have their own handmade book to take home and help them to learn the alphabet.
I work in a low-income, culturally diverse school in Northern California.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and many of them do not have books at home. I think it is a wonderful experience for them to make their own ABC book. They are very excited each day to see what we are doing for each letter of the alphabet.
My Project
I am requesting 1 box of crayons, 2 dozen watercolor sets, 1 pack of markers, 2 gallons of glue, 54 packs of construction paper, and 1 pack of art tissue for the books. My students need the art supplies to make their own ABC books. This year our district has given each teacher $50 for school supplies for the whole year! I can't make this book with the students without your help!
The children are so excited to have their own ABC book.
It gives them ownership of the book and the alphabet to have created the book themselves. They will read it over and over and it will help them to learn the alphabet!
