My students need sensory equipment and furniture that meets their physical and sensory needs. Sensory breaks help reduce behavior in our multiple-disabilities classroom; therefore more time is spent on instructing for social and academic growth.
Our classroom is a MD(Multiple Disabilities) classroom. Our amazing students have specific educational needs that can not be met in a program designed to just address one impairment or in a regular education setting. We are a special education, self-contained classroom. Our students come from a diverse socioeconomic background. Our classroom contains students in kindergarten, first and second grade and all students have an IEP. These amazing students are full of curiosity and are eager to learn new things when they are given high expectations. These students are kind, accepting and generous.
Most of our students have sensory issues and at times get overwhelmed with work, sights, sounds, schedules and their environment.
An area in the classroom that would provide a cool down area, along with sensory tools ,where a student can have their own personal space and utilize sensory toys and equipment would allow the students to have a technique to help teach themselves self-control over their emotions and needs. Instruction is given in small groups or on a 1:1 intensive teaching method. Our students would benefit from a low kidney table where the students would be comfortable because their work environment would match their physical needs.
My Project
If we were fortunate enough to receive these items for our classroom, we would utilize the new materials to meet the needs of our students and help reduce their off-task behaviors and increase their ability to self-regulate their sensory challenges.
We would use the new soft seating to set up a sensory section in our classroom where students would learn to take a break and eventually self- regulate their sensory needs independently and then return to their academics.
The new kidney shaped table would meet our students physical needs during instruction. The bouncy bands on the legs of their chairs would allow students to have movement during instruction with no disruption to the class.
