My students need a space to calm down and practice self-management of emotions. These items are used to create this calming corner for them to use tactile sensory objects, music, art, etc. to safely calm down.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are the heart and soul of our school. They inspire me every day with their dedication and creativity! I am blown away at their willingness to try something new. They are not afraid to put themselves out there and experiment in something they are not comfortable with.
Creative, daring, and dedicated; these students defy societies expectations of them daily.
My student's love to learn and love to show off their many talents. They are world changers through and through. We are a family who supports each other to grow into our strengths and help build up each others weaknesses.
My Project
These materials are all important in creating a space for my students to go and practice healthy self-regulation of their emotions. The space will contain comfortable seating, calming music with headphones for the student that needs an escape from their environment, art supplies for the student who needs to write or draw what they are feeling, books to read, sensory objects for the student who needs a physical distraction to relax, breathing excersises to help the students practice calming themselves down through breath, yoga poses for physical release, objects to stretch/scrunch/pound/rip to let out anger in a safe way, and scent of lavender with calm colors to give a relaxing atmosphere. These are all tools used to help a child feel their emotion and then learn to let it go. I want my child to stay in the classroom and not be punished for their emotions but instead learn that emotions are ok to have but need to be felt and managed safely. This space gives them that opportunity. There will be a timer set so when their time is up and they feel ready, they can join class again. If they feel like they need more time they will be allowed to ask for more or if they need less they are allowed to join when they feel ready. I am giving them the freedom to decide what they need as long as open communication is happening. After a lot of research and talking to other teachers, I have seen how valuable this space is and just how much of an impact it makes on the whole class atmosphere. Please help me bring this environment to my students.
