"Let's clean up and meet on the carpet in three minutes." "Everyone put up your privacy folder for our spelling test." "The red group will red at the listening center." On my quest to be the best teacher I can be, I am constantly striving to improve my classroom productivity and efficiency.
I teach first grade in a low-income urban center.
My students count on school as a safe, predictable place where the routines and expectations are clear and consistent. Many of them do not have consistency at home because of separated families or parents working multiple jobs.
My Project
I would like to maximize our learning time by making some of our transitions even more efficient. Giant sand timers will help make our transitions fun as well as speedy. Students will also be able to determine how much time is remaining by looking at the very tangible sand timers. What does it mean to a six-year-old that they have three minutes left? Sand timers are the clearest way to communicate that.
We have increased class sizes this year, so I am also seeking additional privacy partitions, which we use for tests, and read-along books for our listening center.
Finally, I have many different kinds of paper for various projects: three letter templates, paper for our class books, paper for making cartoons or brochures, construction paper, etc. I would like to organize all the different papers more effectively in an eight-tray paper organizer.
I like my classroom to be an exciting and productive place to learn and grow.
My class last year had some trouble transitioning from one activity to the next, and this will surely be a problem with more students in my room next year. In order for all students to be as productive as possible, they need sufficient and organized materials.
Thank you for supporting my teaching, our classroom, and public education!
