Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a STEM Magnet Middle School in downtown Indianapolis. This means that my students chose to come to our school to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
My 7th and 8th graders come from all around Indianapolis to form a community where we focus on our core values of rigor, community, relationships, and drive.
My students come from diverse cultures and experiences and some overcome significant obstacles to succeed at our school. In their two short years with us, they come in as young pre-teens and develop into teenagers prepared to flourish in high school!
My Project
I am working to develop a critically necessary class at our middle school: a class to teach students about mindfulness and self-reflection! Our school is working hard to implement restorative practices throughout our classrooms but an essential element to that work is students being able to recognize and control their own feelings and reactions.
By designing this curriculum and creating a safe, welcoming environment, I hope to educate students on not only the practices of mindfulness but its benefits as well!
My students rarely get a chance in their day to sit in a calm, quiet space to reflect on their feelings and choices. I want to give them the opportunity to practice mindfulness and experience the benefits but I also want to teach them the brain science that explains those benefits!
We will use the composition notebooks, colored pencils, and markers to work through our mindfulness journals which will include meditative coloring and a gratitude journal. We will use the clipboards so that we don't always have to be sitting at our desks but rather can do work in a circle or on the floor. Our meditation chime will help us start and end class class while the essential oils and diffuser will help create an environment to do all of this work.
