This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an inner-city school that services many amazing, caring, and wonderful students. Even though many of them live in poverty, and some have experienced some tough things in their young lives, they come to me with a positive attitude to learn and grow.
They love to read, and they get very excited when new reading materials are purchased for them.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”
― Charles William Eliot
My Project
My students read in the classroom for the first ten minutes of class each day. They also read if they finish their work, and they are encouraged to read every night at home. Every two weeks (or sooner, if they finish the book), my students borrow a book from me and read it. They discuss the book with me during our weekly reading conference. They also discuss their book with their partner, and they reflect on the book in their journals.
Since reading is such a big part of our day, it is very important to me to have books that will interest my teen readers.
I already have some of James Patterson's other titles on my shelves, but my students have asked for more. They are captivated by his writing! They always ask me if I have additional copies; I would love to be able to offer them more!
