This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Touch a scientist and you touch a child." - Ray Bradbury
Do you remember how curious you were as a child and how much you wanted to learn about new things?
The 22 children in my pre-kindergarten class who are four and five years old are very curious learners and want to know everything!
My pre-k program is housed at a Title 1 priority elementary school with a very low socio-economic status. A high percentage of the children at my school come from very low-income families and in general opportunities to enhance their education outside of the school day are rare or in some cases non-existent.
My Project
Although I try to teach them everything I know, I give opportunities for the students to learn on their own. One way for the independent learning to happen is to have new and engaging materials in the classroom.
Our science center used to be a very popular area for the students, but we have exhausted our supply of materials to expose them to, and their interest in the science center is dropping. The resources that we are requesting for our classroom science center vary from a light pad to explore transparent items to a human body anatomy model. With goggles, stethoscopes, a bucket of transparent shapes, and other materials, we anticipate the students' curiosity will soar while allowing for some higher order thinking.
With the light pad, we will be able to look at some x-rays of the human body and mix colors with color paddles. The opportunities are endless with light pad, light table, simple machines set, and other new materials.
Being the first year of school for these four and five year old students, it is very critical that we expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible to better prepare them to be life long learners.
The donations to our classroom will allow us to provide the students with more resources to expand their imagination and intensify their curiosity.
