I teach elementary general music to 521 students in a middle to lower middle-class neighborhood. My school is not a Title I school, but we are at about 45% free and reduced lunch.
The students are bright and have lots of energy and a love of learning I am always trying to find ways for my students to have fun while learning the different elements of music while performing.
I am always trying to find ways to incorporate literacy into my music lessons; especially with my littles ones. They love being read to and I just don’t have enough books about music in my class library for Kindergarten through Second Grade.
My Project
These books will provide grade level appropriate reading about composers and stories about music. My music class library consists of books for upper elementary students, and the books for this project are targeted for lower elementary students.
The Kindergarten, First and Second graders love it when I read to them.
They gather on the carpet and are totally engaged in the story. If I’m reading about a composer I post pictures and play the composer’s music so they can make the connections. If it is a story about music, we talk about the main idea, place, and main character of the story.
