This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first graders LOVE to read! We read everything from anthologies to menus to zoo maps! But what we would really love to read are CHILDRENS' BOOKS! Our classroom library is in dire need of some help. We do have some books. The average copyright may be around 1995...nearly 5 years before all of my kids were born! The wear and tear on our books is worsening by the day. I have a "books in need of repair" section in my room. Scotch tape works wonders! What I would really like for my kids is an area in the classroom where they can sit, relax, and enjoy reading a good book. I would like a display that shows the books off proudly, not hidden away in stacks on a shelf. I would like to have current books about subjects that are relevant to 6-7 year olds. And you know what would be wonderful...a nice comfy rug to sit, relax, and read. This is the moment in my students' lives where they make a decision as to whether or not they are going to really like reading books. I would like to make it an easy decision for them. I have 17 wonderful kids. My kids live and attend school on the southwest side of Compton. Resources and supplies are very hard to come by; but we have an abundance of spirit, community, and love.
