Inquisitive minds, warm hearts, helpful hands, and sponges for brains. These are just some of the ways you could describe the students that walk through our classroom doors each day.
Our students, with limited English skills, live in a high-poverty, big-city community where the goal is to help them blossom into productive learners and speakers.
Their willingness to work hard and achieve is evident in all that they do. They may come from homes where paying the rent and buying food is the priority. Therefore, it is so important for us to support them in as many ways as we can to give them every chance to succeed.
My students would benefit greatly from having a pencil cup on their desk to organize their #2 pencils (still needed in elementary schools), colored pencils, ruler, eraser, and other classic instruments of communication used by 4th graders.
By keeping the necessary supplies handy and neat right on the corner of their desk they will have all their tools right at their fingertips
There will be no searching through their desk or pencil case to find the right colored pencil when the math problem asks them to color part of the partial products diagram blue and part yellow. They can just jump right to work.
