My Students

Many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. Nine of them are over a 1.5 years below grade level. They all want to learn and they work very hard. My students often do not have pencils, crayons or books and they generally do not participate in after school activities; they rarely have access to technology outside of school.

I teach at an older, urban school where many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel and some of their parents furloughed due to the government shutdown.

All of our kids are eligible for free breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title One school and as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many other economically disadvantaged schools.

My students attend school in one of the most multicultural districts in the United States and many of them are English Language Learners who have recently arrived in this country. They seldom go on field trips because they cannot afford the fees. School is everything to them.

My students have essential needs that are cannot be met by our school.

My Project

I am trying to teach my students about nutrition and healthy eating but we are having trouble. All of my students are eligible from free breakfast and lunch but sometimes they arrive too late for breakfast. Often they have nothing to eat at home. The current government shutdown is going to hurt them because the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which many of our families depend on to eat is being delayed.

I am asking for a few basic essentials like Ritz crackers, packs of tuna, jars of peanut butter and soup to create an emergency snack closet for my students whose families were impacted by the recent earthquake and/or are out of work.

Our school is not a Title I school but I have students who need to learn proper nutrition, healthy eating and self-sufficiency. They often have to care for themselves before and after school.

My kids need the help of caring adults to see them through this crisis. Please donate if you can.
