A healthy brain helps build a healthy global citizen. My students are thirsting for knowledge and in today's world, to find the most up-to-date information, they will need technology to help them sate that thirst. With no computer lab in the school, they need Chromebooks to help them be successful.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds.
We have every ethnicity and every socio-economic level represented, but we don't see each other as different, we are a family. My students work in a public Montessori environment where we teach education for peace. Some of my students don't have access to technology or the Internet at home. They are at a disadvantage in their journey to become responsible adults. All of my students value education and bring a joy and a thirst for knowledge to the classroom each day. Being a public Montessori school in this day and age, we don't receive much funding. Our school does not utilize textbooks as a way to teach but as a resource. Each of our middle school classrooms has only 5 computers for our 25+ students. As hard as both our staff and students work to ensure everyone receives the best education, we cannot make this happen without more technology.
My Project
This project is part two in our quest for Chromebooks for my students. My students need seven more Chromebooks and a case to complete our set of projects for more classroom technology. We don't have textbooks and I do not use worksheets. My Montessori students learn through independent research, using Bloom's Taxonomy to create projects to show that they have mastered specific skills.
The students use computers and the few Chromebooks already in the building daily to research and create their projects. We reach out to other students across the globe virtually to help learn about other cultures and create bonds with others different from us. The students used technology this year to research GM foods, create lessons and presentations on GM foods to present to the younger students, and make posters and flyers for the monthly farmer's market. Technology can help our students in every subject area!
As of today, our school of 642 students has one Chromebook cart with 24 Chromebooks to share.
Each classroom has five desk tops for 25+ students to share. If my project gets funded, all of my students would be able to use technology each day. They will be able to use the resources available on the web to help them become better students and global citizens. They won't have to wait days to use technology. It will mean the world to my kids, especially those who don't have any technology at home.
