My Students
My Title I school serves students in which 100% of the student body receives free and reduced lunch. This diverse population, 40% of which are English language learners and 15% with an IEP, continue to grow academically despite the odds. The school, which is attempting to overcome the stigma related to poor performance and safety issues on campus, has grown in positivity and mutual respect. The community is beginning to embrace this change as family interest and involvement in the school continues to grow.
My students constantly look for small successes and validation.
Unfortunately, these successes, because of the socioeconomic status in the area, are fewer than expected by the state. These students need extra help to get caught up with their peers. They are typically not intimidated by the extra work entailed to get caught up as they tackle projects both in and out of the classroom, and come early and stay late when needed. The students tend to gravitate to the safe environment the school provides before, during and after school tutoring and activities.
My Project
As a teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to improve my student’s growth. They deserve the best teacher that I can be. Multiple studies have shown that having a National Board Certified teacher raises the achievement levels of students. Although it will entail additional time, I and eight others at the school are pursuing National Board Certification. Having accomplished teachers at this school will have a lasting impact on the future of the students. Having National Board Certified teachers will also increase the pride in the community that a percentage of teachers at this Title I school are quantifiably accomplished.
