This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are part of an integrated program, aimed to improve the leadership and transitional skills of high school freshmen. This initiative is also meant to help curb negative outcomes for students in economically challenged and/or impoverished communities. Furthermore, all of our students receive free meals as a result of our Title I status. Despite disadvantages in terms of resources, finances and external support, our students are, by far, some of the brightest our county has to offer.
Innovative tools, advanced learning programs, rigorous classroom supplements, and meaningful extension activities are some of the measures most critical in building formative relationships with students.
Of course, these classroom essentials have to be met with literacy strategies, valuable content, objective-based assessment and language development, all of which are included in my lessons on a regular basis. The struggle for my students is acquiring tangible resources and having access to extension activities that deepen understanding and allow for personal connections to classroom content.
There's always more work to be done in the classroom! With the help of supporters from DonorsChoose, schools that face demographic challenges, like ours, still have strong opportunities to achieve academic success.
My Project
This year my students will be immersed in a 5-week, Black History unit that unveils their history, while making immediate connections to their future. By exploring Bryan Stevenson's "Just Mercy", Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man", Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird", and Sharon Draper's "From the Rock", students will be able to identify the historical and current plight of people of color. Furthermore, our extension activities, to include graphic novel creation, video projects, student interviews, personal portraits and a mock trial, will aid in helping students to make personal connections to the lessons.
School funding limits the tools teachers have access to for implementing lessons that incorporate innovative product creation, realistic project designs, public speaking opportunities and objective-based writing into the standard curriculum.
Despite academic failure being linked to economic barriers at home, these outcomes can easily be curved through community sponsorship and support. Moreover, consistent use of these tools puts a limitless cap on the number of students reached.
