My Students

My 10 and 11-year-old students are so much fun! I am privileged to teach in a mostly rural intermediate school (grades 5-6) where students are older than the littlest elementary students but younger than the teenage middle school students. With that being said, this age group is motivated to play and can be taught more advanced sport concepts, such as game strategies.

Physical education is the only subject that makes your heart race!

In this school of high poverty, I strive to create an age and developmentally appropriate program that provides opportunities to improve social and cooperative skills while encouraging physical activity for health, enjoyment, self-expression, and confidence.

My Project

Our job is to create physically literate individuals! We want students to recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction. During our Survivor Challenge Unit, students are united and work together to solve non-traditional problems. All contributions are valued, and diversity and differences, are celebrated. Games require a lot of soft playballs that students can throw and catch. Over time, these playballs get ripped and torn and need to be replaced. During our basketball unit, students work both individually and in small groups to learn hand eye coordination. Students practice dribbling, passing, and shooting activities. Over time, our basketballs lose air and develop bad spots, requiring replacement.
