My students have a variety of special needs, such as Autism, Intellectual disabilities, and Emotional Disturbances. My students remain with me in the same classroom from K-5th grade. Their whole elementary experience and success falls to me. I see them grow and change every day for up to six years! I take this responsibility very seriously and am honored every single day to make a positive impact on these young, special lives! My favorite saying is "just because your path is different does not mean you are lost.".
My Project
To help my students achieve independence as adults, I must begin with the basic life skills that can be challenging for students with special needs. My school district has recently trained its EC/Developmental teachers how to utilize the TEACCH program for students with Autism. Autistic students respond best to structure! My classroom must be structured in order to effectively teach autistic students. The physical layout of the classroom is an important consideration when planning learning experiences for autistic students. One major learning experience is the bin work task system. The bins are labeled for individual, independent work. I want to use the 3 bin work tasks system for my students. The 20 cubby storage I am asking for will house my already purchased "work task boxes" and make the tasks perfectly organized for students independent learning. The classroom work organizer I am asking for will hold individual student work/file folder games that need to be completed for the day. Each organizer file will be labeled with individual student names so they may access their own work when they rotate to that center/station. My goal is to develop a work task skill that can be applied when transitioning into the work force, and showing my students how to take responsibility for their own learning. Thank you for considering my project!
