Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"When elementary schools include art programs in the curriculum, children do better with math."~Kelly Borsheim. Making clay handprints for families to cherish for a lifetime, is not only a touching memento, but also an art project that my students remember for a lifetime.
I have the best Kindergarten students!
Every one of my students works hard and enjoys coming to school. I work in a high need school. 87% of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch, meaning, these students are living at or below the poverty line. Many of my students are learning English as a second language. We have a variety of family units and living conditions. Some of my students live in motels, trailers, apartments, or a house. Although some of my students start school with outside barriers, they come to school ready to learn every day. The parents of my students want their children to do well in school and succeed, as do I.
My Project
If you are familiar with California's budget cuts, then you know public schools were hit hard. It's tough to get the district to purchase the basic supplies, so asking for something they deem as "non-essential" would be impossible. Although, our parents may not have the financial resources to purchase the items to create these clay handprints, they do have the time to volunteer rolling out the clay and helping our students create their clay handprint. The clay will be used to imprint all kindergarten students handprints. We have a kiln at our school, we will fire them there. They will be glazed and fired again. Each kindergarten student will create their own handprint that will last a lifetime. (I still have mine from kindergarten and I'm 40 years old)
Your donation will make it possible, that we continue this kindergarten tradition at our school.
This project brings tears to many parents' eyes, when they receive their 5 year old's handprint that has been captured in clay forever.
